Barnaby Joyce’s exit marks a turning point for New England

Barnaby Joyce has confirmed he won’t recontest his seat of New England at the next federal election. He’ll finish his term in Parliament but has left everyone guessing about what comes next.

Since his announcement, Joyce has faced repeated questions about conversations with the far-right leader Pauline Hanson. He’s refused to go into detail, but one thing is clear: he hasn’t denied the speculation altogether. And perhaps that’s not so surprising.

A new Redbridge poll shows One Nation’s primary vote has more than doubled since May, rising from six to fourteen per cent. It’s a clear signal that many voters are disillusioned – fed up with the infighting, the inaction and the lack of direction from the major conservative parties.

The Coalition is in the midst of an identity crisis: short on policy, long on division. That disillusionment is pushing some voters further right, drawn to One Nation’s loud but hollow rhetoric on immigration and climate.

Joyce has cited his opposition to net zero as a key reason for his split with the Nationals leader David Littleproud. But with the party seemingly likely to drop the policy altogether, it raises more questions than it answers. He’s also hinted that he no longer feels valued or welcome in the party room – a sign of deeper fractures within the Coalition.

The dysfunction was on full display last week when Liberal Senator Jane Hume joked that she’d “have to speak a lot slower” if she joined the Nationals. It was a tone-deaf remark that underscored just how out of touch the Coalition partner has become with the people it claims to represent.

Joyce’s stance on climate also puts him at odds with many in regional Australia. He’s long argued that net zero divides the bush, yet it’s rural and regional communities already bearing the brunt of climate change: droughts, floods, fires and unpredictable weather. Many are also leading the way on solutions.

A 2023 Farmers for Climate Action poll found 70 per cent of people living in renewable energy zones support new energy projects on farmland. The idea that country people oppose renewables simply isn’t true. Many see them as an opportunity to create jobs, build industries and strengthen local economies.

Joyce’s continued climate scepticism is increasingly out of step with that reality. As Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen put it recently, “The real betrayal of rural Australia is denying the reality of climate change, because it’s rural Australians who pay the price when disasters strike.”

Joyce is right about one thing: it is time for change. But that change isn’t One Nation, and it isn’t more of the same from the old Nationals either.

New England deserves leadership that listens, unites and delivers, leadership that looks forward, not back.

Barnaby Joyce’s departure leaves a void, but it also leaves an opportunity. For too long, regional Australia has been taken for granted. The question now isn’t whether change is coming, but what kind of change we want.

Because real leadership doesn’t divide. It builds. And it’s time regional Australia had more of it.

    1. Fi Sproule You will not get any one to do more for New England than what he has done , get your head out of the sand

  1. The best Member for New England was Tony Windsor by far. He achieved so much for the electorate. Little self-aggrandising, no scandal, hard work and deep engagement.

    1. Peter Traise What did Windsor ever do for New England? Even when he had the balance of power in the Gillard Goverment he did bugger all for New England.

      1. Neal Howard heaps. NBN FTP rollout with fibre for one before Abbott and co screwed it up. A whole lot of work in the Health and Health Education (University Department of Rural Health Tamworth)
Had a lot to do with getting the Armidale UNE Rural School of Medicine happening. And there were numerous other valuable initiatives to try and get better facilities outside of the metro areas.

      2. Peter Traise it was not Abbott but Turnbull that altered the NBN. Roll out and under Labor’ plan it would still be in the planning stage

      3. Neal Howard Bollocks. It was Abbott’s plan to destroy everything that Labor had initiated. He palmed that job off to Turnbull, mostly because he was incapable of comprehending the entire technical concept. The NBN was in its early stages and just starting to get past the initial implementation snarl-ups. I personally had 100 MBps fibre installed in my house at the end of 2012- quite a bit past “planning” stage champ. Then Abbott, Joyce and the whole raft of incompetents came in and trashed one of Australias most significant national infrastructure projects setting the country back about 5-10 years.

    2. Peter Traise and then he hoped into bed with the Gillard goverment He could have done a lot more while he and oakshot had the balance of power

      1. Andrew Hutton He did the right thing with the Labor/Liberal situation though, both at the time and in retrospect from a national and local perspective.

His choice was also what the majority of feedback from his local constituency (us) told him to do. He followed the voters wishes.

      2. Liz Wharton when he sided with Gillard, he lost any respect from the one’s that voted him in and was not welcomed in many towns in his electorate

      3. Neal Howard So very true and then his behaviour and nasty comments regarding a long term supporter was the last straw!

      4. Neal Howard I strongly disagree with that, as I said he followed the wishes of his constituents as well as in the best interests of the country

    3. Peter Traise That’s your opinion. Some of us have different memories! Interestingly some have long acquaintance with both these Gentlemen from a very young age! I back Barnaby!

  2. John Nevin you might like to not keep posting the same comment on every piece about Barnaby.

    #Factcheck
You can not like his politics, but to say he has no achievements or hasn’t delivered is just wrong. Top of the list is APVMA and Quipolly Dam, and there’s a map on his website https://barnabyjoyce.com.au/funding of all the funding he has helped secure for the region since 2013.

    1. New England Times the map shows Federal funding, it doesn’t identify where Banaby had a hand in it. Many of these would be community committees applying directly to Federal grant rounds and being awarded on merit.

    2. New England Times the APVMA move was a disaster! Plus the Bolivia realignment was negotiated by Tony Windsor and budgeted by the Labor government then! How many other convenient “slips”?

    3. New England Times I have posted the comment on two separate posts telling us how great our federal member is. I remain sceptical about his work ethic and effectiveness. You might like to post an article sometime telling us how great he is and listing his achievements for New England.

    4. John Nevin We’ve deleted three times, so again, please stop being repetitive. You are welcome to submit your own opinion piece to engage rather than sniping in the comments.

  3. I will never at 72 understand you people & I grew up in the New England area, you run about with your politics like Pomy football hooligans with your my team is better than your team the same old catch phrases about Unions & the National Debt you’d be the best comedy festival in the world if you weren’t for real & at the end of the day the only winners are people like Gillard Abbott Rudd & Morrison all of whom are snotty nosed private school brats who’ve never had to go without in their lives & are lining their own pockets while bullshiting to you that their on your side. Look what Morrison did with Robodebt you can’t tell me that dick thought that up all by itself, & what difference does it make did any of you self called conservatives make a million out of it? We still have Centrelink there’s still 5% of the population that are a problem same as any other country but are we one step closer to Nazism? Or Comunism? Did China invade yet? Take an honest look at yourselves it’s No longer the Australia I grew up in & it’s all you fault. Maybe it’s time youall faced reality you don’t know everything & stacking $ into family trusts to the tune of $1.72 trillion isn’t helping that kid smoking that joint & that indigenous bloke swilling grog is going to move onto Ice if they aren’t helped & your Jewish politics isn’t helping, not everyone born is lucky enough to have a heading like you they may be a lot more useful if they’re helped & subtlety pointed, productivity may be something that comes from coercion rather cat & nine tail. I remember having the Police chase us about in the 70’s out there when we were on motorcycles treating us like we were member’s of the HA & then they cleaned a police station out because they were turning pulsater sives out in sapphire plants. I’m still here it’s been a struggle & tuff at times got no help no support no kindness at all but regardless to public opinion I’ve still done no time regardless of public opinion, you should stop & think about your own self absorbed behavior you people unlike some I never had my spouse cutting sapphires behind a shop front down town never raped my own kids or stole & took bribes for a living Your the problem with this country your self promoting Greed.
You have to have these people because they’re a necessity evil there is no better system but you don’t have to worship them they’re not going to save you not ever from your own nasty attitude.
Go ahead laugh prove my point.

  4. Governments are held to account by strong oppositions. Joyce’s actions doing the Coalition no favours.

    1. William Peisley the coalition needs to get back to common sense instead of being scared of the Teals

  5. Barnaby has been the only one besides Pauline Hanson to call out the corruption in the government……and she has been proven right time and time again

    1. J M Viles Neither called out the corruption which was rife in the previous liberal / national government . The worst most corrupt government in living memory . And by a hige margin !.

      1. Garry Reynolds what a load of BS biggest criminals are the labor always has been always will be

      2. J M Viles Garbage . Where were you when all the corruption was occurring on a daily basis . Scandal after scandal !.

      3. Garry Reynolds if you have nothing better to do than run a good hard working man down ….I really really feel sorry for you…as for corruption all have to do a quick Google…

      4. J M Viles he ripped of NSW tax payers with the water rights money going straight to his best mate. Not to mention screwing his own wife and family over and being a piss wreck

  6. Lots of hippy anti-vaxer Cookers in the area and Barnaby knows his target market really well. Even after being totally absent and useless during the floods unlike the Sikhs with their free food during the floods. His future boss hates the Sikh community along with her friends Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Andrew Hastie

  7. Given that most Australian voters vote for a party rather than an individual and given that Barnaby’s views and allegiances no longer align with the National’s he should resign now and have a by election in New England
