Letter: Affording a home in Tamworth

Kate McGrath Senior Vice President Tamworth Branch, Australian Labor Party

Labor is supporting people to afford a home in the Tamworth community, where they work, raise their children and have family support.

The NSW Labor Government’s approval to rezone vacant government-owned land in East Tamworth is therefore welcome. It opens the way for more than 200 homes, including over 70 social and affordable homes.

For working people and families struggling with housing costs, more affordable housing could make a real difference. Housing security affects everything from the weekly budget to children’s education and people’s ability to stay connected to their community.

The approved plans require a minimum of 30 per cent social and affordable housing combined. We would like to know how that allocation will be divided, who will manage the homes and how eligible residents will access them.

Tamworth also has more than 600 households on the social housing waiting list. Social and affordable housing meet different needs, and both deserve continued investment.

This announcement is a positive step, but our region’s housing needs extend beyond one development. Affordable housing must remain a priority so that people on modest incomes have a realistic chance of finding a secure home here.

We welcome this progress and look forward to seeing these plans become homes.
