Opinion: Is it too late for the National Party?

Annabel Doherty, Armidale

Timing is important, especially when facing political annihilation.

I believe the Federal National Party should have solidified their separation from the Liberal Party in 2025. They may have had the chance to stop or minimise the drift of their voters to One Nation during the latter half of 2025. In my opinion, doing it now is possibly too late for their survival.

I wonder if the surge in One Nation support can sustain itself, history suggests it will not. If it does we will most likely see the end of the National Party at the next Federal election. Or panic might set in and we may see the renewal of the marriage vows (rinse, wash, repeat) before we head to the polling booths.

History also suggests we will see another One Nation implosion at some time. The National Party will be banking on that implosion happening sooner than later. Ain’t politics fun!

  1. The problem for the Nats is that the Libs have little chance of getting back territory they lost off their left flank to Teals. This makes the Nats left look enticing. So the Nats have Libs on the left and One Nation on the right. No wonder they are worried.
