I take it all back, Barnaby’s a fool

Digitally created image.

I have long defended Barnaby Joyce as one of the smartest strategists in conservative politics. Disagreed with him on almost every subject, but respected the skill.

Although sometimes laboured and more than a little dramatic, Joyce has always been the sort of operator who had the next seventeen moves mapped out before anyone else even realised a game was being played. Whatever else people said about him, he was never politically dumb.

But this move — joining One Nation — is really dumb. Just gobsmackingly stupid. An utterly idiotic, selfish, indulgent, entitled act of self-immolation that will forever trash his political future and erase any potential legacy.

And it will really hurt the New England.

If Barnaby Joyce genuinely believes New England is going to follow him into Pauline Hanson’s chaotic circus, he has completely misread the room. New Englanders are not small-minded bigots easily seduced by simplistic populist rhetoric. They are good, solid country people with a deep sense of fairness, community, and decency. For Joyce to assume they’ll march behind him into a party defined by grievance, fear, conspiracy, and manufactured outrage – not to mention a more than casual disregard for the truth and those pesky facts – is an insult to the electorate he claims to serve.

If he thinks his friends will stick with him, he is going to get a rude shock. This isn’t like a divorce where friends quietly pick sides and a few attempt to straddle the middle. Joyce hasn’t just left the Nationals: he’s jilted every National Party member, voter, and supporter that’s worked to get him where he is personally. He’s walked out on the very people who built his career, protected him at his lowest moments, and tolerated the chaos that came bundled with him.

If he thinks he can get *anything at all* as a One Nation MP for New England then he really is a fool. No part of the public service, no Minister, no anything, will be handing out grants or spending to projects in the New England for fear that it may be seen as being supportive of the hateful views of One Nation. Watch now as funding for everything from the New England Highway to major tourism projects suddenly is under review, put on hold, delayed, and otherwise stymied.

The social cost to Barnaby personally will be enormous. How long will Barnaby be able to tolerate being avoided in the street, the pub, the grocery store, the footy? How long before the isolation cracks him and he quietly escapes to the city or Queensland, somewhere that has enough One Nation sympathisers willing to be seen with him that he doesn’t have a daily reminder of how badly he’s screwed up?

The social cost to our community will be even bigger. If you thought Walcha was divided over renewables (something Barnaby is significantly responsible for)… wait until that level of animosity, mate against mate, neighbour against neighbour, consumes all our communities. The bluster and lies of One Nation are easily brushed off by New Englanders, who will not look past the racism and bigotry to believe the rainbows-and-lollipops promises of a party that will never, ever be a party of government. But the personal loyalty will tug hard for some, and the discord created between those loyal to the man and those loyal to the party will not heal easily nor quickly.

And if he thinks Pauline Hanson is going to hand him the reins of her creation, he is delusional. Hanson will never let anyone else control her party until you pry it out of her cold dead fingers. And she’ll more than likely destroy the party on the way out.

Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, one thing has always been undeniable: Barnaby Joyce has never, prior to this, been a fool.

And yet, here we are. I was wrong. I was 200% sure there was no chance that the politically savvy, sharp-witted campaigner Barnaby Joyce once was would ever commit political suicide.

Maybe he has a plan. Maybe this is 17-dimensional chess.

But if the rationale behind this move is that New England is about to reveal itself as a haven for white-trash rednecks who think it’s fine for men to beat their families and still access their kids and belittle their exes; or for people to hurl racist, bigoted, hateful abuse at others without consequence; or any of the other social atrocities Hanson has actively supported and defended — then I’m leaving. Because that is not the New England I know and love.

And it’s not the New England Barnaby Joyce is supposed to be fighting for either.

  1. Needing attention and relevance is more important to him. Shows how much he really cares about his community

  2. how can you attack a bloke that has always had his ‘constituent’s backs !!?? ,.. he’s a bloody good human , wherever he flys his flag !! .. lets encourage him and his choices ,.. give him and one nation a fair go ‘mate’ ,.. ’tis the Aussie way !!

    1. Alan Holmes Joyce didn’t support the majority of his constituents when the House voted on marriage equality legislation. Does anyone genuinely believe that PHON cares about ‘a fair go’ for migrants, the unemployed, the environment etc?

    2. Alan Holmes He didn’t have his constituents in mind when he jumped ship and ignored their electoral intent !.

    3. Alan Holmes how has he got our backs ? He just talks , we’ve had 3 disasters lately , the highway getting smashed , the snow event and the cyclone and all Barnaby did was post about the G7 and solar panels , he talks a good game but goes missing when it’s time to do some actual work .

      1. Rich Anthony really mate ??? so he’s responsible for the bad weather now is he ?? i’ve seen him out amongst the people more than any poli ., he lives here amongst us ,.. andd attends/supports many things in the community ,.. i wasn’t going to answer any replies , yet i feel that he is only human ,.. its actually God that has a lil’ say in weather events ,.. and , his son , i believe, was the only perfect man to ever walk the earth ,.. the rest of us can only do our best !? .. where was albro during recent catastrophies ?? ,.. on his honeymoon !!?? lol

      2. Alan Holmes wasn’t saying he was responsible for the weather , he’s never shy of self promotion so if he did do anything to help (as a leader should do) we didn’t hear about it . He did , as usual nothing to help and then has the nerve to complain that Armidale hasn’t grown – mate , you’ve been representing us for 12 years , where’s the growth ? Why isn’t he promoting the region for tourism , it’s all talk and no action and as soon as he goes the better , get Adam Marshall in , he worked hard for this community , I’ll support someone regardless of their politics and Barnaby Joyce hasn’t done hard work since that night with a former staffer.

      3. Rich Anthony lol ,.. well young fella ,.. iff we all get judged by our ‘worst moment’ ,.. then none of us are ‘innocent’ ,.. in my world ,. i look at folk’s heart and soul ,.. anddd , in my humble opinion, he’ll get my vote !!??

      4. Albo is allowed to get married and have a honeymoon and he has released a statement in regards to the recent fires in bulladelah, he was also in Queensland for the cyclone earlier this year. He didn’t take a holiday to Hawaii while Australia burned!

      5. Alan Holmes Ah, that dependable logical diatribe aimed at keeping self-interested people like Joyce in his cashed-up job! Wonder if after the next election he’ll get back up off the political pavement or be rolled into the gutter!

      6. Kevin Paton “diatribe ” ,… “a forceful and bitter verbal attack” ,.. would that describe myself who is asking for acceptance and respect for another human’s choices , ??? or would that be ‘bullying’ comments and messages i’ve received ‘mate’ !!??? 🙁 🙁

      7. Alan Holmes The negative connotation is there! Add whatever weight you will to such a brief interaction. How about deceitful confected criticism of someone who returned to engage in the disasters from his honeymoon?

      8. Kevin Paton i won’t be using any ‘big’ words on you ‘mate’ ,.. i can see you are ‘university educated’ on your profile ,.. pity they didn’t teach you how to ‘agree to not agree’… i made no personal attack on you , yet twice now you have ‘attempted’ to downgrade myself and my comments ,.. ‘have a good day ,.. and have a good Christ-mass’ kevin

      1. Terry Vincent Quarton sorry , i hereby exclude all of yo’all perfect humans from this or any other comment !!?? … see you at the Pearly Gates mate ,.. God will decide !!?? 🙁

      1. Denny Carr i am so lucky i stumbled upon this post ,.. otherwise i wouldn’t have met sooo many ‘perfect’ humans !!?? … lol

    4. Alan Holmes you may appreciate his presence in the community, however he has delivered no substantial infrastructure to the region, even when he was deputy Prime Minister. The devolution of government departments to Armidale isn’t a major boon for the region, and there’s next to nothing else that you can count. Just because you think he’s a good bloke, it doesn’t equate to him having his constituents backs, nor delivering to his electorate. If not doing the job you’re paid for, and being racist towards the people that are working hard for both their families and to deliver services to the community is the Aussie way, we are screwed as a country

  3. If Barnaby wanted to move to one nation he should have stepped down or waited till the next election. He misrepresented himself yet again to the electorate.

    1. Kali Lovell He sure did !. Shouldn’t be permitted within the rules of the political system we have. Same with name your Price !.

      1. John Mellon I certainly didn’t…never once voted for him…he’s always been a slime ball, who only ever won with lies and decent and dragging other people through the mud to get his position in the first place

      1. Craig Ruhle I get my news from many sources commercial channels 7 and 9, SBS, Al Jazeera, ABC and overseas news. I do not accept Rupert Murdoch’s version of the news.

      2. Rhoma Kelly hahahaha so your really poisoned 🤣🤡. I don’t watch any msm in Australia or overseas it’s all theatre and lie’s

      3. Your pretty stupid as the Zionist Jews have their tentacles in every msm outlet you can name doesn’t matter what side of the fence you think there is

    1. Tony Ryan He was never a Kiwi . His grandfather was which meant he was eligible for NZ citizenship. This link was enough to disqualify him

      1. Rob Wren He was entitled to NZ citizenship through his grandfather. He legitimately didn’t know this was enough to disqualify him

      2. Rob Wren yes but he isn’t supposed to have duel citizenship! Can we please deport him to NZ? LOL.

  4. The most accurate description that the editor of the New Englander has given of Joyce. Like most of the electorate she is now realising just what a buffoon Joyce is.

  5. So when things aren’t working, nobody is allowed to change course in order for a better outcome?!
    Yeah, righto then!!

    1. Steve Coxhead
He can do as he pleases …after he hands the seat of New England back to the Nats .
Quit the party , forfeit the seat , simple .

      1. William Wright on what grounds? Barnaby raised every dollar which was spent on campaigning in New England as well as tens of thousands for others like Pat Conaghan & Alison Penfold.
Are the nationals going to give back the money which Barnaby has also raised since the election?

      2. Steve Coxhead
        Ethical grounds .
You don’t get to keep a seat just because Gina pumped cash into your campaign.
He’s flagged his intent to leave the house and run for the Senate , so he’s now just a lame duck member, filling time and drawing a wage .

      3. William Wright so you would rather New England have a costly by election because in your opinion members who signal an intention to leave a party or parliament are no longer effective.
I don’t remember hearing your calls for Andrew Gee or Mark Coulton to step down, or any of the members who have ever announced their retirement plans.

      4. Steve Coxhead
My view is that any member who quits his party should resign from the parliament and a by- election be held to elect a new member .
The former member can then run again , either with a new party affiliation or as an independent.
This should apply to everyone, regardless of party …Labor, Liberal , Nat, Green or One Nation .

      5. William Wright that won’t happen until the next election when he runs for the senate. Until then the seat of NEW England belongs to One Nation in the HOR because Barnaby is still the MP for New England until the next election and he now represents ON in that seat!

      6. Anita Joy Hayter
And who will the seat belong to after Barnaby and Hanson have their inevitable falling out ?

Where will he land next ?
        Katter’s Australia party ?
        Family First ?
Or perhaps a new party :
        “Gina Rinehart’s sock puppets “

    2. Steve Coxhead They can change course , but not if it compromises the electoral intent of his constituents !.

      1. Garry Reynolds with every other nationals held seat suffering a swing against it while Barnaby had a swing towards him, the electoral intent of the constituents shows that more people in New England vote for Barnaby than for the national party

      2. Garry Reynolds Maybe what people want is not being reflected by the Nationals!! We need more strong One nation candidates!

      3. Steve Coxhead This is a very telling comment that is more about the gullibility of the electorate than an accolade for Barnaby.

      4. Ryan Jude it’s more about having a position from which a member can be effective & best use their abilities. It’s not about votes, & if that was the only reason to do something, then that would eventually reflect poorly on that politician

      5. Taylor Graz how would you interpret a swing to Barnaby when every other nationals seat had a swing against it?

      6. Steve Coxhead wrong. Riverina had a positive swing of almost 6% first pref and almost 3% TPP to Nats, nobbled by ON. NO love lost mate. Our member kept his ego at home. Unlike yours.

    3. Steve Coxhead its not a better outcome….no government is going to be racing to hand a One Nation electorate funding …the optics are appalling…. if you don’t get that you are as stupid as Barnaby!!

      1. Denny Carr your labor party are hardly racing to give New England any money as it is! If you don’t get that you are as stupid as Sarah Hanson “Sea Patrol” Young

      2. Steve Coxhead thats bullshit and you know it… some examples from a quicj google Tamworth will receive $9 million for the long-anticipated Northern Inland Aquatic, Education, and Health Centre of Excellence, Tenterfield will receive $8.2 million for the Angry Bulls Adventure Trail Tourism destination, Glen Innes will get $600,000 towards is ANZAC park upgrade, and Inverell will receive $550,226 towards its Lake Inverell revamp.

    4. Steve Coxhead so says another recent switcher to one nation – Joyce will be in good company and feel right at home.

      1. John Nevin that could be the most sensible comment that you have ever made!
Absolutely he will be in good company, & that company is growing fast!
There are a lot of x nationals who have either resigned or let their membership lapse who have joined One Nation, there are a lot of people who have been politically engaged but never a member of a party who have joined One Nation, and there are a lot of people who have never been politically engaged but who are sick of the current state of politics who have joined One Nation.

      1. lol, dream away. Albo will be cheering. Latest polling has PHON picking up LNP seats, but Labor also gaining a few. Albo might even crack 100 seats.

      2. Norm Thomas old Redhead doesn’t have a good track record with men. He wouldn’t be the first to lose his political career getting mixed up with her! LOL.

      3. Allen Springborg the PM has nothing to worry about with her. She is only taking LNP votes and destroying that party! Labor have increased their primary vote since the last election. No serious Labor supporter would vote for her

    5. Steve Coxhead Change course lol Joyce was leader and set the course. How about taking some responsibility Stephen. Joyce was 100% behind renewables when it suited him politically. Joyce leaving the Coalition is the worse thing to happen to Labor in years.

  6. Barnaby you are a Legend good on you for making a good commonsense move thats in the best interest of the Australian people not like these other sellouts that are only interested in holding their jobs and positions in parliment. Gees that pisses me off more than ever. They are in panic mode at the moment thats for sure and so they should be. They have done absolutly nothing for us the Australian people in over 40 years. People want real solid change. They are sick of the bullshit and people are waking up to it. One Nation are the future in Australian Conservatives. The Nationals and Libs are a dying cancer waiting to be cut off.

  7. 46.72% at the last election had already concluded that Barnaby was a fool….welcome aboard RK Crosby…..

  8. Those that don’t understand politics should refrain from commenting on them. After all, it is those who were not intelligent enough to vote for someone else besides Albanese, who had already failed the Australian people, that we have to thank for getting us in the mess the country is in at the moment.

    1. Cameron Sinclair it obviously you haven’t got a clue about politics yourself so you really should stop talking while you are ahead.

    1. Adam Pay The “left” is more than happy to see the split in the conservative vote. Labor is assured to stay in power and no need for Greens support. Keep it coming 😄

  9. “Albanese is sitting at a 2PP of 58% because 50% of people leaving the coalition will never vote for One Nation.

Have you noticed how as One Nations vote goes up Albanese’s vote goes up”? – Gerard Rennick People First Party on X

      1. Anne Wieland – Gerard Rennick People First Party is not a Greens member.

He was a former Senator with The Liberal party and walked away like the truck loads of members are & became an independent.

He is the President and founder of People First Party & building a grassroots party for the people.

Gerard has a Commerce and Master’s degree in taxation law and applied to finance who is pro small Government and was a stay at home father.
        https://peoplefirstparty.au/policies/

    1. Sandra Kay Albos vote going up ? With his ministers having snouts so deep in the trough they can hardly breathe ? You need to keep up dear.

    2. Sandra Kay albos vote will keep going up as he imports dependents en masse and expands the public service.

  10. Only fool here is RK Crosby, masquerading as a journalist instead of the former Australian democrats member with a political motivation that shouldn’t be brought into mainstream solid journalism.

    1. Danielle Arkit well that’s unfortunate as about 60% of the leading political journalists and commentators in the country are former democrats

    1. Peter Jack So if an area is conservative and not beholden to the leftist woke ideology, the people are rednecks? Your opinion is worthless since you live in the city and have probably never been further west than Leura.

    2. Well if you understood how our senate parliamentary system works, you may want to rethink your opinion. I guess we will see if his decision works or not at the next election.

    1. Gary Grant You are correct the polls have LNP supporters bolting to ON with the left and independents staying pretty steady.

  11. Best move ever. Go Barnaby and Pauline. I suspect there will be a few more in the coming months. So ON gets a lower house seat till the next election and then Barnaby goes for a senate seat. Great work.

      1. Geoff Holland It will split the conservative vote at the expense of the LNP. Last night on Afternoon Briefing Pauline did nothing but bag out the LNP. She is clearly hunting seats off the LNP not Labor.

      2. Robert Walker She is clearly winning …..If LNP wish some winning they had better get back to being real conservatives values and get rid of the woke leftie BS. Please remember LNP have been bagging Pauline out for 30 years……even had her falsely jailed…….maybe karma is taking hold.

      3. Anne Wieland Yes she is romping ahead probably a combination of her good planning and zero planning by the LNP. That jail term was a disgrace.

      4. Robert Walker If only they had embraced her ideas in the first place we would not have descended into this mess we have now.

      1. Dallas Haggar Well it is a long way down the track and if ON still keep going strong and Labor stays on their course…..then he will romp it in.

      2. Dallas Haggar he will and one or two more, best retail pollie in australia our barnyard is And new England and parkes will also fall to onp perhaps Hunter too plus 4 or 5 in Queensland

  12. Maybe the voters of New England will now finally get the message. Barnaby has done what Barnaby always does; look after himself.

  13. “No part of the public service, no Minister, no anything, will be handing out grants or spending to projects in the New England for fear that it may be seen as being supportive of the hateful views of One Nation. Watch now as funding for everything from the New England Highway to major tourism projects suddenly is under review, put on hold, delayed, and otherwise stymied.”

    This is the part.

    1. Emily Roy The lack of funding for everything in the New England electorate has been on hold since Labour won the election in 2022. It’s called POLITICS!!!

    2. Emily Roy What do you believe he should have done, kept sitting on backbench twiddling his thumbs?

      1. John Bryant he should have retired instead of just hanging on like a leech on the taxpayer’s purse.

      2. Taylor Graz Not wrong, but back bench in ALP,LP,Nationals means you will be seen & not heard,at least he will now have a say win lose or draw

      3. Taylor Graz Open his mouth, does have to say what he is told, surely you know how the major parties work

      4. Taylor Graz Just Hope & pray one day it will mean “One Nation” not what it means now in Aussie, surely your not saying it’s all warm & fuzzy @ present

      5. Taylor Graz Pauline Barnaby your not saying we haven’t bigots & self centred politicians @ the moment, worst of experienced in over 80 years

    3. Emily Roy you will have a new Member. He will run for the Senate if a seat is available in NSW. At the moment the One Nation seat is taken for 5 years.

    4. Emily Roy what are these so called hateful views. Do you think labour/ liberal are angels or something.

    1. Gundy Hunt he hasn’t so far. How many chances does someone deserve before people wake up. Our region is dying because of right wing conservatives like barnaby selling us out to corporations and billionaires. They have NEVER put the people first

      1. Cassandra Karpinski we live in Barnabys New England electorate, and he has done a lot for our region, there are some pollies that bludgeon on the system which might be your case, but we like Barnaby he calls a spade a spade.

      1. Jo Banđit the man is only human, and I assume you are a human, so you are allowed to go out and have a beer or 10, and on some occasions you end up a bit tiddley, but some do gooders like yourself may not drink, so that’s just sad you haven’t been in the real world.

      2. Gundy Hunt I’ve never had an affair on my partner nor would I ever. I’ve also never been a politician on big bucks and behaved like a moron in public while maggotted. Seriously you think he’s a person of integrity????

  14. The LNP never got over losing their base to One Nation. If Pauline isn’t careful Barney might try and take over and direct all preferences over to the Nationals. Politicians are cunning like that. Then I suppose they would also have to find a way to claw back the small L liberals from the teals. Bit of work ahead.

    1. Mark Umbers Voterscan put who their preference goes to and unless you get a vast majority of first votes the second preference does not makes difference

    2. Mark Umbers Not the base that has shifted to ON! It seems the extreme phobics, bigots and racists that were with the LNP have shifted. Not the base but a faction! Obvious that Joyce was losing ground and made the jump out of self-interest! Let’s see if he clears the gap or ends up rolling from the pavement into the gutter!

  15. I had gone off Barnaby BUT I will now follow him as he has rejected NET ZERO and followed One Nation The only party at the moment that seems to have a handle on things at the moment. Who did Trump invite to the US?

  16. Should have gone to a by election. If he had just left the nationals and stayed independent, all good. But the instant he decided to join a new party, it needs to go to the electorate

      1. Rebecca Taiki Barnaby should have to pay for a by election, not the tax payers. It should be a consequence of his decision making.

      2. Rebecca Taiki because the electorate didn’t vote for PHON. What barnaby has effectively done was run for a party that he knew the electorate would vote for only to decide he didn’t want to be in that party, he’d rather be in this party, but if he had run as a candidate for that party at the election he would have lost the seat. So he screwed over the entire electorate for his own benefit.

    1. Cassandra Karpinski MPs aren’t required to resign if they change parties. The voters still chose him as their representative, and he can continue representing their interests regardless of party label.

    2. Cassandra Karpinski Yes, I agree. You shouldn’t be able to simply opt out of the party that got you elected. That is not true to your electorate. A bi-election would give the electorate the opportunity to make a new choice. What Barnaby is doing is all about Barnaby not a commitment to an electorate.

  17. Barnaby is not a fool, he can get more done in the Senate than he can in the House of Reps for any party, he also knows the Nationals will not lose out as his replacement for New England should be a Nationals candidate.

    1. Neil Willis He has less power now than he did as a National. If he wins a senate seat he’ll be totally irrelevant, but he will be on the gravy train for 6 years then retire.

    2. Neil Willis He has already had some years in the Senate before going to the lower house, why is nobody noting this?

    3. Neil Willis Barnaby has created the perfect opportunity for a strong independent to run. They have been successful in the past.

      1. Caroline Chapman a popular independent beat the Nats candidate in Calare in the last election.

    4. Neil Willis he’ll be irrelevant in the senate.. the Govt can negotiate with the greens to pass good legislation. Barnyard will be sidelined, except on Sky.

    5. Neil Willis funny that someone who lives outside the electerate
Saying that Barnabys a fkn disgrace has done SFA for us around Tamworth
Stick to your side of the range

      1. This Neil Willis is a argumentive asshole tree hugger who knows nothing n then denighs what he said

    6. Senate must have a better bar as thats what he his known for apart from liaisons with staff and charging helicopter rides around his electorate. He has done nothing for his electorate apart from bleed it dry.

      1. Neil Willis No polls show they will go with the well known independent. If you knew unrest that barnaby has caused in recent years in electorate you would know this. They according to polls would prefer and independent who is focused on the seat.So I suggest you do your research, the times they are changing

    7. Neil Willis He’s no fool alright, wouldn’t be game to run for New England as a One Nation candidate.

  18. Well it’s opinion is like an arse hole, everyone has one and I have a different one .. good on ya barny

      1. Gundy Hunt hmm I don’t know the ins and outs of Dungowan. I think his conduct in the referendum was fine. We had the referendum, people voted, end of story. No hard lines, no revisiting. Done and dusted. I won’t start on Joyce and his many failings. For the record I grew up in Armidale, mum was mayor.

I met Tony Windsor when he gave a speech at my daughter’s graduation from UNE. In my opinion he is so far ahead of Joyce as to be no comparison. Still of people in New England want to vote for Joyce that’s your right. I do a lot of work in electricity and in my opinion new englanders are doing their very best to throw away the best economic opportunity they’ve had in 100 years. But then people often cut off their noses to spite their faces. I’m very fond of New England, trout, horses, cars motor bikes and a lot more. But I don’t try and pretend it’s still 1967.

    1. Peter Leicht New England had no funding under Lib/Nats either, and yet Barnaby is such an asset as a politician 🤷‍♀️

  19. Who are you going to write hit pieces on once Barney is gone?
You literally don’t do anything else.

  20. I like your work Kath but you’re not reading the room. He’s not standing for the lower house at the next election. He’ll stand for a ON Senate position.

  21. Well one nations palling up with Gina, so I guess the bar tabs bigger.
Pauline went from bankrupt to Multi millionaire so I guess he’s just following the money and the bigger bar tab.

  22. So we who support him with One Nation are New Englanders are not small-minded bigots easily seduced by simplistic populist rhetoric?

  23. He’s no fool I’m not a huge fan but he’s heads above a lot of other politicians big mistake putting him on back bench why? Nat are in partnership with Libs in all sorts of trouble,I’m a conservative voter but can see he’s leaving a ship who is extremely unsettled ever I think he won’t do anything to upend Nats. Just contribute where our country needs it ,balance of power in senate be huge if could happen.

    1. Montgomery Diane he is one of the reasons that the LNP is in trouble. The far right conservative, which he is part of, have been given the finger by the moderate conservatives. Barnaby just can’t see that.

      1. Kath Hodgman and your the expert I’d rather a far right conservative than left Labor leaning one ,there’s wasted talent on the back bench and few patties on front there wishy washy with there direction.

  24. Your earlier reporting suggested he was going to struggle to be re-elected. Moving to the Senate means he can keep his nose in the trough via the ON vote without having to win a 50%2PP. So maybe it was a smart move – for his pay packet.

      1. Taylor Graz if he’s competing in the Senate, he only needs 14.3% of the vote to get elected. Not 50.1% for the House.

      2. Rick Scott so they will need to more than double what they recieved this year. That’s a lot of footpaths and staffers he’ll have to avoid in the next 2 years.

      3. Taylor Graz did you forget he got over 70 percent support for his electorate in the last election and most will follow him to One Nation.

  25. What a thorough assessment of the attitudes and beliefs which underpin One Nation. However I disagree with you about Barnaby prior to making this decision to abandon ship – where I think he has long been showing the same beliefs and attitudes as One Nation. These are not new for him. Thus I’m not surprised at all by his defection.

  26. Retail you say? A lot of stuff comes retail: Crocs, plastic foot baths, My Little Pony, booze, KFC, porn

  27. Well, if he was, what’s up with his career trajectory…? From Dep PM to joining One Nation…

    1. Maybe for him it isn’t all about career trajectory? Maybe he actually cares about his constituents more than his own ego? Should be more of it.

      1. Yes because he didn’t follow the party line. He certainly wouldn’t fit into the ALP dictatorship. About 65% of the primary vote at the last election if I remember correctly, and I think they were votes for him, not the National Party. Was he backbenched due to his lack of popularity with his constituents do you think?? (Which was prior to the last election 😏) Keep living in your dreamworld and don’t forget to get yourself dipped, drenched and vaccinated so you don’t endanger your ovine buddies 🤣

      2. Wes Leedham And lets just say, the kind of attention he drew was unsavoury to the Nats and that’s why he was relegated to the backbench. He was as far ahead as you could get in that party and the Dep PM no less. Next minute he was lying on his back in Civic….

      3. He answers to his constituents, not the party. Has a mind of his own, unlike the majority of the arse covering politicians that we have nowadays, and the members of the public that just blindly believe everything that the party machine tells them

      4. It’s like a never ending triangle isn’t it 🙄. It’s Wednesday mate, you better toddle off to Centrelink while Barnaby continues to collect his paltry $233k + Expenses salary. I wouldn’t knock his rock bottom situation back 🤣

  28. It’s a really long time, like a really really long time in politics, until he runs for the Senate. I look forward to watching what happens during this time. I think he would have been much smarter running as an Independent. Really weird move to align oneself with a group that appears to be terrified of the complexities of life. Anyways, moving along now … maybe we can talk/learn more about how much Ms Rinehart has invested in the renewable industry.

  29. C’mon you Barnaby lovers.
We all know the move is to secure a good income for the next few years, particularly for Vicki & the boys.
Barnaby has done nothing in parliament for the last 20 years, except deceive, seek the headlines by making ridiculous statements and collect a fat salary!

  30. The Nationals have betrayed their constituents…The Liberal Party needs to be medicated…I have left the Liberals and Nats for the same reason..So am I to be treated as a fool for the same reason..OR are we not to read the writing on the wall

  31. Didn’t New England have a One Nation candidate at the last election they could have voted in if they wanted One Nation?

    1. Robbie Bentley Yes One Nation did run a candidate last election and got around 10% of the vote, Labor got 20.3% before preferences, and Joyce secured 52.2% before preferences. Even if Joyce ran solely as a One Nation MP, he’d almost certainly hold the seat.

      1. Matheww Hall no he wouldn’t. 30% will stay with the Nats, Barnaby will take maybe 15% personal vote with him and the rest will scatter. It will come down to whether there’s a strong enough independent to get ~25%, pick up all the preferences and leapfrog Barnaby… or the Nats will retain because everyone else will put One Nation last.

        1. Kath Crosby this simple opinion won’t age well…..

By the next election one nation could be looking at 20-25% of the primary vote.

      2. Kath Crosby and you know this how , if the nats dont have someone who the people like it will be open slather

  32. Enough of this irrelevant Hanson/Joyce nonsense! Question, why doesn’t the media ask any of the LNP/Hanson supporters why didn’t the LNP/Hanson build any new electricity power stations to replace the old ones while the LNP/Hanson were in office for 20 years? Why didn’t the LNP/Hanson do anything at all while in office, causing this massive economic problem and cost of living crises? Do you people ever think why the country is actually having these problems after 20 years of the LNP/Hanson or do you just continually get distracted with petty contrived immigration and racist culture war nonsense the completely corrupted LNP/Media churn out?

  33. Anyone who thought Barnaby was one of the smartest strategists in conservative politics is just plain dumb. Second rate acting fooled the New England electorate for a few years, and the yokels just love him, but he just profitted off their gullibility and sold them out to mining interests. Rat cunning may have got him the top job in the gNats, but since then it has been a slow spiral downwards that still has a chapter or 2 to go. See you in the gutter again soon, Barney.

  34. Poor old RK Crosby sounds like a disgruntled university indoctrinated shrill. The 2 party system just isn’t working anymore, they are just the left and right wing of the same political bird and Aussies, and in particular a great big percentage of us here in the bush in Barnaby’s electorate have had enough, and if that means having One Nation holding a strong balance of power at the minimum after the next election then I think New England just might even follow Barnaby over to the One Nation camp. Interesting times ahead for sure.

  35. Barnaby is much smarter then all the media commentators , One Nation is the Party that is going to just get bigger & Barnaby knows things will happen, not talk all day & do nothing like the dying major party’s. GO ONE NATION 💕👍👌

    1. Trevor Rhonda Streeter Have you analysed her policy on the GST? 20% apparently. That would hit poorer people very hard.

  36. We will wait and see won’t we. I know that I am trying with the idea of changing so are a lot of people I know as well

  37. Barnaby and Pauline stand for Australia and our way of life. I can’t say that for most other politicians that think they know everything and not listening to the people.

      1. Craig Dammerel yes a very smart woman that knows how to manage money and big business. Anything is better than the loser’s we have in government right now.

      2. Michael Lewington Jealous of a Shitgibbon whom her family hates, yea money is your main interest, I pitty chuckelfuck Simps like you , now fuckoff and go count your pennies

      1. Shaun Taylor said every lefty that’s worried about the future of Labor staying in government.

    1. Good of you to out yourself as an alcoholic, lying, cheating grifter and drain on the public purse. That’s what Barnaby’s all about.

    2. Michael Lewington please please give me two paragraphs explaining exactly what “our way of life” actually is?

      1. Ilona Topolcsanyi obviously you haven’t been in Australia long enough to learn anything and need to get out of the city. If you don’t know or not willing to learn I guess you shouldn’t be living in Australia.

      2. Michael Lewington Michael, you use that phrase without being able to explain it which says you actually don’t know what it means either. You can’t write 1 paragraph of an explanation.

How can there be 1 way of life for all 27 million Australians.

I bet in your tiny little country town, you couldn’t even find consensus.

      3. Ilona Topolcsanyi I’m sorry to hear your another brain dead lefty that lives in their own little world and only care about yourself. You should try getting a job and pay your own way in life bludger.

      4. Michael Lewington blah blah.
Put pen to paper Michael and try writing just one paragraph. Bet you can’t write a single paragraph about “the Australian way of life.”
Keep throwing around bullshit phrases around like “mass migration” and “the Australian way of live” I’m sure you’ll convince someone stupid enough to believe you know what you’re talking about.

      1. John Mundy More like “Our way of life or the highway” bigots and phobics! Nothing quite like a monoculture is there?

    3. Michael Lewington as a sixth generation Australian I promise you they don’t stand for the Australia I know and love. Nor do they stand for my way of life or that of the vast majority of people I know, or the public I serve.
The voting patterns across the nation also give the lie to what you assert. Speaking on behalf of others in the face of contrary evidence is, may I suggest, very unwise.

      1. John Hibbard sounds like a typical lefty comment from you that’s happy to be ruled over by the communist Labor party. Most real Aussies would definitely disagree with you.

    4. Michael Lewington How would that life differ if Hanson were PM? ( senator not house of reps)
I am concerned as a woman that hard right governments without fail enact bans on women’s reproductive rights. ( we saw that move in Queensland with elements of LNP) We see DEI rights swept away with the trump regime. What is Hanson’s stance on this matter. Does anyone know?

  38. If the Nats had any brains they would divorce the Libs and join one nation. What a party that would be

  39. BJ is a rather smart politician dont sell him short he might just know exactly what he is doing could be planing to head one nation at a later date but at present Pauline is still going strong there has been alot of pressure on her the last two elections but it seems she is not gunna give up on us she is fighting just as hard as ever

    1. Stephen Naylor because he won’t win a lower house seat. He’s a coward with no convictions.
He thinks he can get more cash at One Notion – it’s his entire reason for doing anything.

  40. Thing’s change, politics change, politicall parties change their stance on policy’s, and people change when there’s not applying anything to the community

    1. Fay Hammond He and Pauline have had a very good go, their snouts are well and truely in the pig trough.

  41. Psuline gets a 100 k payrise out of this wonderingvifcshecis sharingvwith barney to seal the deal

  42. Took you all a long time to realise there was nothing behind the bluster, BS, lies, misinformation and stunts. Most people outside NE have been shaking their heads when he was elected over Windsor.

  43. Barnaby should resign and an election held. He elected under the National Party banner not one nation

  44. Following Mark Latham and joining that forever clown Roberts? If that’s smart, I seriously cannot see how.

  45. Excellent article, like we try and teach our children, every choice has a consequence. Not always a positive one, that’s why we need to think about it. For the people of New England, leading up to the next election, consider even with a reduced majority Labor if the electorate votes One Nation, has no reason to support the area.

      1. Kay Warren didn’t see you complain during the 13 years of dodgee sports rorts, millionaire freebees, Robodebt, Water buy back from Angus Taylor by Barnaby at 4 times the value. That’s the thing with conservative voters they have very very little long term memory.

  46. And what have you done thats so great to make you think you are qualified to comment? Let me guess, a piece of paper from some shitty university that has made you confuse education with intelligence?!?!At least he has the courage of his convictions to follow the path he thinks is best to represent Australian battlers. So common nowdays that nobodies think they can run their mouths with absolutely nothing to back it up! Especially 3rd rate crappy backwater internet pages like this one. If you were as great as you thunk you are surely you would be reporting for a major outlet!

  47. We are in late stage capitalism
People will do anything for money
Don’t forget Pauline had her nose in the trough at Donald Dumps party
    Luckily Australians don’t like fascism

  48. Barnaby is just balancing things up and he puts himself out there. Full credit for his efforts and much appreciation for a really healthy democratic society.

    1. Nick Layne Do you live in Barnaby’s electorate? Can you list infrastructure projects completed in his term as your member please

      1. Julie Smee He has been a member of the federal Parliament continuously for 20 years. What more does he need. He is very well liked in his electorate.

  49. No it’s not. No matter what happens he’ll be on top of the ticket in NSW. Thats 6 years in the Senate at about 1/4 mill with allowances a year. Of course he did it, he’s got several families to pay for. And it’s all adding nicely to his Parliamentary pension fund. Winner Winner, I’d eat a steak cooked in a sandwich maker for that load of cash.

    1. Hugh Johnson #factcheck all politicians elected after 2004 just have super, not a deemed pension.

      1. New England Times He was elected in 2004. He’s also been a Party Leader and Assistant PM. As well as having served as minister. His Super payout with this next 6 carefree years, as he’s not in a party of any consiquence, will make yours and mine look like the earnings of a bad busker. He’s always been in it for one reason, himself. As his performance as the “Special” Minister of Water proved. Millions for a handful of texts.
He’s a shonk, sorry If he’s your local Member, even sorrier if you are under the Murdoch umbrella.

  50. I do not agree with all One Nation policies or their rhetoric about immigrants and different cultures. However, I respect their right to express an opinion on issues like immigration and multiculturalism in a respectful way. I also believe that current immigration levels are not sustainable and may create social tension in the coming years unless they are urgently addressed and managed with better community participation.

We know that the vast majority of new immigrants settle in major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, where they require housing and essential services. In Sydney, developers are having a field day building thousands of new apartments, many of which are sold to investors—both individual and corporate—who simply want to make a profit. If this trend continues, Australian children may never be able to afford an apartment, let alone a house with a backyard. Even renting a two-bedroom apartment in Sydney now costs more than $700 per week. An aveage house including old ones can cost over one million.

Instead of decentralising government services, the current Minns Government appears to be promoting further centralisation. Billions of dollars are being spent on rail and road infrastructure in Sydney, while regional NSW continues to be overlooked. This government-sanctioned imbalance tells a clear story. When the next State election comes around, both Labor and the Coalition will likely offer a token regional package—perhaps a billion dollars or a little more—as if that is sufficient to claim they are investing in the regions.

New England voters will need to be very careful about who they support next time. NSW needs far greater investment in regional infrastructure, especially railway renewal. There are more than 3,000 km of non-operational rail lines across the State. While some are branch lines, the line from Armidale to the Queensland border is a major line that could serve the region far better if restored.

Barnaby Joyce was strong on decentralisation when he served as Deputy Prime Minister. The relocation of the APVMA is one example.

I am not as pessimistic as the author of the article about Barnaby’s decision to join One Nation. New England has long been known as a seat with little real electoral contest. The Nationals traditionally held the advantage, except when Tony Windsor broke through as an Independent. Barnaby’s defection could give One Nation the momentum it needs to generate a genuine contest between itself and the Nationals at both State and Federal levels. This shift may also create more space for minor parties and independents to highlight their platforms and could even make New England a marginal seat. And as we all know, governments pay much closer attention—and deliver more investment—when a seat becomes marginal.

I have met Barnaby only once, during a pre-election forum in Armidale several years ago. I admire his ability to dominate the airwaves and television screens well beyond Tamworth and Armidale. He is a strong communicator, and his command of language is a rare political asset. His future contributions should be judged not only by his words but by his actions.

Unlike the Nationals or Labor, I hope he and One Nation will recognise the importance of working collectively as a community to persuade both State and Federal governments to conduct a feasibility study into re-opening the railway line from Armidale to Queensland. Restoring this line would allow New England to regain its status as a confident, growing region. It would also support community groups such as New England Railway Inc. to operate heritage trains from Armidale and showcase our cultural heritage to the nation and the world. Businesses would benefit from affordable freight transport, essential supplies could move efficiently, and our environment would be protected from unnecessary pollution. The New England Highway would also become safer with fewer heavy trucks.

The social cost to our community of having a single party—such as the Nationals—dominate the political landscape for decades is unhealthy for democracy and community empowerment. In contrast, creating space for genuine competition in ideas, policies, and visions for regional prosperity and wellbeing would be a welcome change. It may even be the moment our region has been waiting for.

  51. The rest of Australia has known he is a buffoon for years. Good to see his electorate catching up,with the rest of us at last.

  52. Barnaby is running for the Senate not the House of Reps, we will get a new member from the National Party. Pauline will give him the number 1 spot for NSW Barnaby will have no problem getting in. Have a look at the polls One Nation is doing very well.

  53. So how does it feel to be a One Nation electorate, New England?
Barnaby is effectively Leader of One Nation now-the only lower house sitting member… but he’s chucking the old backyard in, and heading back to the Senate, at the top of the ticket with One Nation now – he’s a shoo in

  54. Time for a Conservative Reset…The Libs and Nats walked….So the Nats want Generational change.. As I see it they are getting it…Its called One Nation

  55. My money is on Barnaby knowing exactly what he’s doing over what RK Crosby is doing or saying 😂

  56. People seem rattled about this decision. Must be a reason, let the name calling and negative comments begin

  57. Barnaby and One Nation are the ideas of a drunk simpleton mumbling into his beer, only being tolerated by the RSA because he’s a regular.

  58. It must be a good move, the left wing media and politicans are piling on them, they might be a bit worried. If he was no danger to anyone, no one would give him a second thought.

  59. Good move to One Nation. Now people that liked Barnaby but wouldn’t vote Nationals can vote for him.

  60. Great work Barnaby- let’s see the end of Albanese the woke spineless gutless communist lying traitor he is. Labour is destroying Australia and the Australian people- VOTE ONE NATION Australia and all this rubbish stops.

  61. Every Teal Seat was lost as a result of Barnaby Joyce.

I saw it in both North Sydney and Bradfield with the slogan “A vote for Liberal is a vote for Barnaby Joyce!!

  62. I thought New England times was essentially a newspaper. Not a personal opinion paper. Just lost all credibility of reporting on actual events. Now we now that you don’t report events. You give your opinion on events. That’s completely different. Well done.
