The Breaking News that Wasn’t

Jan Kleeman, Farmer and retired science educator and cattle breeder

All the huffing puffing and threatening, all the factional fighting, blame shifting, navel-gazing and leadership challenges over the last 6 months and nothing has changed as far as Coalition policy platforms go. Furthermore, there are still no real energy plans and as stated by Sussan Ley, none to be expected until after the Coalition have been voted back into Government after the next election. No wonder they are in no hurry!

Collectively they are still in denial and a state of willful ignorance about the cause and effects of continuing to pump green house gasses into the global atmosphere. Their collective laissez faire approach to welcoming net zero “if it should happen”… as long as it was easy and they didn’t have to do anything — that is, “we can get there with technology, with choice and with voluntary markets”…. is leaving business communities in a state of disbelief, uncertainty and anger at the expose of their political and economic ineptitude.

Individually within the Coalition, things are a little different. The bellicose language has softened, there is a convected aura of ‘we are all on the same page and great at being united’, but underneath it all, things are apparently now moving with ’hastie’, which admittedly would be preferable to a ‘taylor’ made job.

Sadly for Sussan, and Australian females of all colours and stripes, she has sealed her own fate by pandering to the demands and intellectual and political ineptitude of her party.

Senator Canavan has barely got a mention for his role in this ‘news breaking’ non event and seems destined to continue being ignored by one all in Parliament, but still heralded as King Cole by Facebook and Fossil Fools

Amongst some in the Coalition there is a welcome sign, nothing too explicit mind you, that there might just be some truth after all in the need to address our insatiable desire to make bucket loads of money by continuing to burn fossil fuels, and to not denounce the Paris Protocol just yet. The “Science” is settled but the “Economy vs Environmental Viability” debate and tug of war is nowhere near over amongst the Coalition fraternity.

Barnaby Joyce seems to be the only winner in this more than 6 month sorry debacle. As a self-appointed ’free’ agent at taxpayer expense, he can broker for himself the best deal possible by just sitting back watching, waiting and working out which way to jump at the next election; back into the fold or into Pauline’s tangled web…..a not particularly honourable political strategy!

Barnaby has declared he will not stand as National candidate for New England at the next election. He has emphatically stated that his trump card is to keep voters guessing and all his options open. Barnaby as we are well aware, is a master deal maker; a master at making deals to advantage himself.

Pauline Hanson has just removed her own name from her political party, the inclusion of which would be an anathema to Barnaby’s ego if he were to switch parties, Pauline has publicly invited Barnaby to jump ship. She has recently opened a Hunter and New England Branch for “One Nation”.

Maybe the ‘dealing’ is already in progress. To reveal his hand right now would come with a financial cost uncertainty for Barnaby, and as we already know money is a big part of Barnaby deals.

Catastrophically, New England has not seen the last of Barnaby Joyce. It is with fear and trepidation for our future that many in New England await his next political move.

  1. Well written thankyou. The LNP seem to have learnt nothing from their recent electoral result. They are continuing with the same Chicken Little policy ensemble that delivered their Dutton induced drubbing. No proactive policies just tear everything down and revert to the past. They are not listening to the electorate, while the candidates that they are losing seats to are. We deserve better. It is a shame that Adam Marshal has moved on but we are fortunate to have Brendan Moylan.
